Learn about SCAT and public access television at a free orientation open to the public. All new members are required to attend an orientation before registering for classes.

SCAT Basic Studio Production: Lights, camera, action!
This class is for members who want to get started producing multi-camera studio programs. In the first two sessions you will learn how to work as a camera operator and floor director in SCAT's three-camera TV studio. The last two sessions will cover the operation of the control room, including the digital switcher, audio board, and Compix graphics. You will also learn the basics of directing in the studio. After completing the class and crewing on two productions, students will receive ther Studio Producer certification and will be ready to reserve the studio for their own productions.

Intermediate Studio Production
Learn to ensure the quality of your productions using the waveform monitor and vectorscope. Add a fourth camera and fly it on the jib arm. Hook up a computer to show web sites live. Feed various video and graphics sources to a monitor on-set, etc., etc.

Studio Directing

This class for certified Studio Producers covers techniques for directing a crew in the studio. Learn and practice the proper director commands and procedures and how to adjust the camera setteings in the control room. Students will practice the stapes of "live-to-tape" directing.

Community Producer
Whether you want to make a public service announcement or a full-length documentary, these courses will teach you all the necessary steps of portable production. Students receive their Camera Certification and Community Producer Certification after completing both classes and two short certification tapes.

Basic Portable Equipment is project-based to facilitate learning. In the first three sessions students will learn camera operation, audio techniques, and the basics of lighting in the field. The group will brainstorm project ideas and will be encouraged to work together to shoot field footage. Students will have one month after the instruction sessions to take out the cameras and shoot a certification tape that demonstrates camera and audio comptetency. Upon completion of the certification tape, the member becomes "camer certified" and may reserve the cameras for Channel 3 productions. There will be a follow-up screening and discussion session towards the end of the month for constructive criticism and future project planning.

Certification: Completed upon submission of a 3- to 5-minute certification tape. Members with Camera certification may use SCAT's miniDV camcorders, microphones, and accessories.

Advanced Portable Production

Advanced Editing with Final Cut Pro
This class is for Final Cut Express editors who have edited at least one program for cablecast. Building on their Express skills, students learn to edit with the professional Apple software, Final Cut Pro. Batch digitize, advanced graphics, and multilayer editing.

Instructor: Alica Brugnoli
Pre-requisite: One completed Final Cut Express project submitted for cablecast on SCAT and footage for a new project to be edited on Final Cut Pro.

Special Workshops

Introduction to Photoshop

This training course explores the robust and intuitive Photoshop functionality. Through hands-on instruction, students learn key concepts such as file size, resolution and bit depth, as well as the difference between raster and vector graphics.

Prerequisites: Basic Mac or Windows skills: copying/pasting, right-clicking (contextual menus), finding files, switching between programs, exploring windows

Digital Still Photography

Beginning students will be introduced to the basic controls of the digital camera. The class will cover the digital workflow from image capture to preparation for printing. There will be a discussion of lighting and compositional techniques that will enhace your photographs. Bring your digital camera and the manual to class. An understanding of basic computer skills is a plus. Two sessions.

Instructor Patricia Garrity has been making photographs in and around Somerville for many years. Most recently she taught photography at Somerville High School. Patricia holds a Masters degree in Instructional Media from Boston University.

Producing Music Videos

Come learn to direct, produce, and edit your own music videos! This four-session course, taught by Prince Charles, is the ideal way to learn practical filmmaking skills using professional cameras and post-production software. The couse takes the students from the initial concept through to the finished product, covering all aspects of production, both creative and business-related. Within four weeks sutdents will write, direct, shoot, and edit three-minute music videos. The completed videos will be shown on Channel 3 and pressed onto DVD to demonstrate to friends and industry contacts the ability to create contemporary music videos. The class is open to certified SCAT producers and non-members who have access to a video camera. All levels of experience are welcome.

Introduction to Documentary Filmmaking

This class is for Field Certified producers who want to begin producing a short documentary. Students will learn how to develop a topic and storyline, pick a location, gain the subjects’ trust, ask effective questions, understand shot composition, shoot for maximum editing flexibility, and be aware of ethical considerations.


Segments from selected documentaries will be shown to help students gain a wider knowledge of the field of documentary film and video production. The examples will also help the students understand the process of developing and structuring a compelling and interesting story. Over the course of the five-session workshop students will develop their own project plans and being production, using class time for discussion and critique. After the first three sessions the students will pick convenient times for the two follow-up classes, separated by several weeks to allow time for production activity.


Instructor Dacia Kornechuk has an MFA from Boston University in Documentary Filmmaking. Her film Nikki’s Fight won several awards and was featured in many film festivals. She is also the SCAT Membership and Youth Programs Coordinator.

Vlogging: Video Distribution on the Web:

Learn how to digitize and format your video project for publishing as a vlog on the Web. Several new websites exist where individuals can create personal webpages that incorporate print and video using simple, pre-designed templates. There is no charge for these services. This class will teach you how to create a vlog of your TV show and link it to the SCAT programming page.

Compix Graphics

Learn to create professional graphics for your productions in the SCAT main studio and the HOT Set with Compix software. This program allows you to easily create scrolls and crawls, lower thirds, unique backgrounds and textures, and insert logos. It provides almost unlimited print possibilities.

Host-Operated Television (HOT) Set
Learn how to host your own live program in our state-of-the-art studio which includes a deck for pre-recorded video, a visual copy stand, and live phone-in lines. One on one training is scheduled with a staff person.
