Media goes under the lens in a new TV series

Critical Focus: A Forum on Media Today
Show #3 Gender and Sexulaity in the Media

February 15, 2007, 8:00-9:00 at SCAT

With stereotypes of manly men eating Burger King cheeseburgers, women who act like their primary concern is their mascara running, white gay men who love to shop and decorate, to the often sensationalized lives of transgender people on television and movies, to the almost non-existence of images of lesbians in mainstream media, what is at stake, and how are we affected? Are we being sold gender ideals and norms, and if so, how do we know?
Media depictions of gender roles and sexuality stereotypes have changed over the past two decades, but is it for the better or for the worse, or is it just different? Join moderator Andi Sutton and guests Nancy Nangeroni, Dr. Brecken Chinn Swartz, James Nadeau and Lisa Henderson on February 15 as they engage in what should be a very interesting and timely discussion of gender, sexuality and media.

Tickets are now being distributed to residents who want to be in the studio audience for the third episode about “Gender and Sexuality in the Media.” This show will air live on the Cambridge and Somerville cable systems on Thursday, February 15th, from 8:00 – 9:00 p.m. It will also be viewable worldwide through CCTV’s live webstream at www.cctvcambridge.org. The show includes time for studio audience members to pose questions to the panel of experts, so those particularly interested in the subject of media and youth are encouraged to get their free tickets right away. Space is limited. Tickets are available at CCTV at 675 Massachusetts Avenue, in Central Square Cambridge, and at SCAT at 90 Union Square Somerville.

CRITICAL FOCUS came about as a collaborative effort of two prominent community access TV stations to address a deficit in the media’s coverage of itself, and to help viewers better understand how representations in the media affect their own culture, beliefs, and behavior. Each episode features a diverse panel of experts from academia, journalism, the broadcast industry, and social action organizations discussing the interaction between media and our society. The series began on December 14th with a discussion of Media and War; this premiere episode continues to play Thursday evenings from 8:00-9:00 p.m. until the live cablecast of Episode #2 on January 11th. Later programs will deal with topics such as gender and sexuality in the media, how media ownership affects content, race and religion in the media, and media activism. For more information about the Critical Focus TV series, visit the series blog at http://communitymedia.typepad.com/critical_focus. The series is also available on DVD for just $10 per episode.
