Hans Elmidor, a 17 year-old junior at Somerville High School, has been an active member of the SCAT SAYMedia! Youth Program. Hans was born in Haiti and moved to the United States with his father when he was 8 years old. From his experience of coming to the United States and learning a new culture at such a young age, Hans says, “I can go anywhere and meet people quickly,” which is a valuable trait to be successful in the world of video and film production.
At age 11, Hans thought he wanted to be a singer or an actor, but when he found filmmaking he found his calling. Hans has taken many production classes at SCAT and completed various film projects, from producing game shows to directing documentaries. His latest projects include a documentary on why people are so addicted to Myspace, as well as shooting a project for DARE Family Services, an organization that helps teenage mothers with children. He is also very involved in his community and high school, and often the one they look to shoot the Somerville High School basketball games, Somerville High School Graduation Ceremony, and other events.
Hans enjoys the community at SCAT because he can learn all the basics of filmmaking now so that when he goes to college he does not have to start from the beginning. When Hans finishes high school, he hopes to pursue his filmmaking career through college and beyond. He wants to put his ideas into television shows and movies so that he can show them to the world. Hans says that if he stays focused, his dream is to be in a big studio directing movies and living in his little house. In his words, “I only hope I can make it.”
From my time working with Hans in the Youth Media Program at SCAT, I can say that I have not had a more pleasurable experience and have not met someone so young that has so much drive and enthusiasm for video and film production as Hans does in a long time. It has been so much fun working with Hans and teaching and learning with him. If you have a film or video project that you need help on, I could not recommend someone more responsible, fun and eager for you to work with!
