Through a collaboration between Somerville Community Access Television (SCAT) and the local domestic violence organization RESPOND, we created three short videos Planning for Safety, When Dating is Dangerous, and Immigrants Facing Domestic Violence.
Why did we start it?
Realizing how local programming increases community awareness, SCAT decided to create a
series of videos and public service announcements about domestic violence. Teaming up with
RESPOND, a Somerville family violence
shelter and resource center, and the Somerville Domestic Violence Task Force (SDVTF), SCAT
developed a family violence video/television campaign that targeted the Boston area.
How did it work?
Recruiting participants from local organizations including the police department, youth
programs, immigrant services and other community organizations, we gathered groups of six
to eight participantsto work on each video. In three workshops, RESPOND provided an intensive domestic violence
training, and in two classes at SCAT, we taught how to handle and operate the cameras.
Once training was complete, the participants discussed what information to include in the
video and how to present it.
What was the result?
As a result of MAPPED, over 30 community
organization employees are educated about domestic violence and public access television.
They learned how to complete a video, and some have continued to create additional ones of
their own.
The three completed MAPPED videos met the Boston areas need for increased outreach to youths and our largest non-English speaking populations Spanish, Portuguese and Haitian-speaking individuals who make up 61 percent of Somervilles non-English speaking population and 40 percent of the Boston areas.
